I had a career millions of men and women would have loved to have. I got paid to go to NFL games. I got paid to go to the Super Bowl. Many times. And yet, the most important things I learned in football, I learned off the field.
From the time I was a 25-year old, wet behind the ears sportscaster, I would bug Dallas Cowboy general manager Tex Schramm about why he did things the way he did. Why was the front office so stable? Why was everybody so pleased to be there? What made this place so different from so many other places I’d worked.
Tex told me the answers, and I wrote it all down. How could I not? Because it wasn’t about winning on the field, about passing and running and tackling. It was about winning in the office. Where most of us work.
Welcome to The Pro Football Way. And don’t worry about eye black. You won’t need it.
